old kids on the block?

I guess everybody’s aware that archetypical and original boyband New Kids On The Block has reformed. Like someone said, It’s a bit hard to see what niche they’re trying to fit in now, as they’re too old for the boyband scene and they don’t have all (and never had) that much musical credibility. Like Spice Girls they’re probably going to find that they can cream some money out of a few nostalgia shows and that’s it.

Anyway, the news brought back some memories for me. Not that I was a fan. Hell no. But I actually did see them live once. Yes, I did, and I could explain that there were free tickets and a younger blood relative who was a diehard fan involved, but I’m not going to make excuses. In fact, I’m going to give them props for putting on a darn good show. A lot better than a whole bunch of bands I’ve seen.

With that said, I’m going to admit that I think this song and video may very well be one of the most embarrassing moments in the history of music.

EDIT: I can’t help it. i just rewatched this and I have to discuss it in greater detail.

Who the fuck allowed Donnie to wear a jacket with Malcolm X? I mean, that’s like Jessica Simpson showing up in a t-shirt with a picture of Valerie Solanas. And note how they’re trying to give Jordan a bad boy image because he’s – wow – not paying when he rides on the subway! Back off, gangsta rappers! The boys in NKOTB also like to live dangeously. And then they sneakily combine making Jon appear cute by bathing his dog with making him a wet ‘n’ wild babe in a see-through t-shirt. But the weirdest thing is the chicks approaching their car. I dunno about you, but when I see two chicks with huge hair and mini skirts chatting up guys in cars and then going off with them, I think about one thing and one thing only. But hey, maybe that’s what “five bad brothers from the Beantown land” should be up to, what do I know? I never knew any bad brothers from Boston. But I have known some 12-year-old girls and I think I can say that picking up prostitutes is not the way to win their hearts. Or, for that matter, their parents’ wallets.

And finally – “we’re positive/and no matter what you think we really care”? That’s a violation of everything I believe in!
